Why does the air fryer emit a strange smell during its first use?

This is completely normal. New heating components have a protective manufacturing coating that burns off when first heated. To clear this out, run the air fryer empty at 180°C to 200°C for 10–15 minutes in a well-ventilated room before cooking any food.

Should I remove the rubber bumpers on the sides of the crisper tray?

No, leave them on. These bumpers are made of food-grade, high-heat-resistant silicone. They are designed to hold the crisping plate securely inside the basket and prevent the metal plate from scratching the non-stick coating on the inner walls.

Do I need to pour oil directly into the bottom drawer cavity?

Never pour loose oil or liquids into the main basket drawer. The air fryer operates strictly using rapid convective hot air airflow. If a recipe requires oil, lightly toss or spray your food with oil before putting it into the basket.
